Shawnee State Park Program Schedule

Both rugged and beautiful, Shawnee State Park is located right along the Ohio River. Touted as once being a hunting area for the Shawnee, the park still has rare sightings of black bear and bobcat. It boasts both a lodge and cottage rentals.

State Park Lodging:

Lodge:  The lodge features fifty guest rooms, elegant dining room, meeting rooms, indoor and outdoor pools, game room, sauna, jacuzzi, tennis, basketball and shuffleboard courts.
 

Cottages: There are 25 family cottages sleeping to six, with two bedrooms, bath/shower, living room, double-wide rollaway bed, complete kitchen, microwave, telephone, dining area, screened porch and charcoal grill.

Two premium cottages: also offer Jacuzzis. Lodge facilities are available to cottage guests.

Camping: there are 103 sites suitable for tents or trailers and features electric hookups, waste disposal, heated shower houses, flush toilets and laundry facilities. Pet camping is available.

Rent-A-Camps:units with basic camping gear may be reserved.

Rent-A-Tepee: units with basic camping gear may be reserved.

A group camp is available by reservation

Park Activities: 

Boating: Roosevelt and Turkey Creek lakes offer boating with electric motors only. Launch ramps are provided for access to the lakes. Rowboats and canoes are available for rental at Turkey Creek Lake.
 

Fishing: largemouth bass, catfish, bluegill, crappie and trout. A trout derby is held annually at Turkey Creek Lake.
 

Trails: There are several nature trails in the park, from one to two miles in length. There is a 60-mile Shawnee backpack trail operated by the Division of Forestry.

Horse Trails: The forest also offers 75 miles of bridle trails.
 

Swimming: Public beaches are situated on Roosevelt Lake and Turkey Creek Lake.

Golfing: An 18-hole championship golf course and pro-shop are located near the marina on the Ohio River.

 Descriptions and Times

 

9:30am-11:30am

Big River Ecosystems   Stroll along the beaches of the Ohio and find out how this giant body of water supports many rare plants and animals. Meet at the Campground Amphitheater.

 

6:00pm-11:00pm

Catfish Tournament     Register between 6:00pm and 8:00pm with the friends of Shawnee State Park at Roosevelt Shelter House to find out rules and regulations Aug. 17

 

6:00pm-7:00pm

Critters and Cream      Cool down with a delicious ice cream sundae and enjoy a peek at some native reptiles. Sundae’s cost $2.00, reptiles are free. Meet at the Shawnee Lodge Lobby.

 

1:45pm – 2:30pm  

Fun with the Lively Library Lady   Join Jenny Lavender at the Roosevelt Shelter in the Campground for a craft.

 

7:00pm-9:00pm

Orchids, Trees and Beavers     Come on a walk along the Harry Knighton Trail to take in the rare orchids,  plentiful trees, and learn about North America’s largest rodents. Meet at the footbridge at Turkey Creek beach.

 

 

 

5:00pm-6:30pm

Scary Animals of Shawnee   Come learn about Bobcats, Bears, Bats, Copperhead and Rattlesnakes.  Meet at the lodge lobby.

 

12:00pm-3:00pm

Visit the Nature Center   Cool off in our quaint little A-frame with the animals and the naturalists.  Ask for a bug net to catch a few insects to feed the turtles and lizards. Hold the non-venomous snakes and see the venomous snakes that live in Shawnee.

 

4:00pm-6:00pm

Wildlife Investigators   What’s in Your Backyard? Find out by searching for sign in Shawnee State Park enhancing your ability to find the clues leading to the critters. Meet at the Nature Center.

          KIDS CRAFTS

Meet at the amphitheater for a crazy craft with Shawnee’s fabulous volunteers.

August 4 and 11 crafts begin at 10:00am

August 18 and 25 crafts begin at 6:00pm

 

Knit, Crochet & Chatter   bring your current knitting or crochet project to campsite # 32 and work on it at this exciting outdoor and casual get-together. Homemade muffins and coffee will compliment this fun and enjoyable event. August 25 at 10:00am.

             

Dusk (that’s when it’s dark)

Movie    Relax and enjoy the film at the Shawnee State Park Campground Amphitheater.

 

 

Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. *All activities are subject to change according to weather conditions or unforeseen incidences.
